About Us

Steel Dynamics UK is a leading UK stainless steel stockholder and processor supplying stainless steel plate, sheet and profiles for high-integrity and regulated applications

Based in Blackburn, Lancashire, we hold over 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless steel, with every tonne supported by full certification and traceability and controlled under one roof.

As a dedicated processor - not a distributor - we control the entire value chain under one roof: stock management, cutting, inspection and dispatch, with full traceability throughout.

Our Story

Steel Dynamics UK was founded in 2011 by Rob Pattenden and Danny McKinley with a single mission: to build the UK’s most capable dedicated stainless steel processor. From one machine and limited stock, we have grown to hold over 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless steel alongside industry-leading processing equipment

In January 2026, the business entered a new chapter. Acquired by Steel Dynamics Holdings Limited and backed by new investment, Peter Cowgill joined as Chairman and Ian Johnson as Executive Group Director, working alongside Rob Pattenden and Danny McKinley. Operationally independent, financially stronger and entirely focused on stainless steel.

UK Manufacturing

Steel Dynamics UK operates as a processor, not a distributor. That distinction matters. A distributor sources material from multiple suppliers across multiple locations. A processor controls the entire value chain - procurement, stockholding, cutting, inspection and dispatch - within a single dedicated facility

Every piece of stainless steel we handle is received, verified, processed and certified in our Blackburn facility. There is no handover between sites, no blending of material from different sources, no gap in the chain of traceability. For customers in nuclear, aerospace and other regulated sectors, that is not a preference - it's a requirement.

Investments

Our single facility at the Walker Industrial Estate in Blackburn houses over 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless steel alongside the UK’s most comprehensive stainless processing capability - including the UK’s largest 14M x 4M waterjet cutting machine.

Concentrating investment in one dedicated, stainless-only facility means every pound of capital translates directly into capability. With new financial backing secured in January 2026, we are well placed to extend that capability further - in direct response to growing demand from nuclear new-build, life extension programmes and other high-integrity sectors.

Quality Standards

Quality at Steel Dynamics UK is structural, not aspirational. Because we process only stainless steel, in a single facility, the risk of cross-contamination - a genuine concern in shared, multi-metal environments - is eliminated by design. Every incoming delivery is verified by Positive Material Identification before production begins.

Every outgoing order leaves with full certification and traceability documentation. Our industry-recognised accreditations set the standard we hold ourselves to, and our stainless-only operation means we can defend that standard on every order, to every customer, in every regulated sector.

Nuclear Expertise

Steel Dynamics UK was the world’s first metal service centre to achieve ISO 19443 - and our entire operation is purpose-built to maintain that standard. We process only stainless steel, in a dedicated facility, with no cross-contamination risk and unbroken traceability from mill origin to finished part.

As nuclear grows in importance to the UK’s net-zero strategy, our stainless-only processing model positions us as the natural supply partner for the sector’s most demanding requirements.

Health & Safety

At Steel Dynamics UK, safety is not just a priority - it is a core value embedded in every aspect of our business. We recognise that our people are our greatest asset, and that belief drives our steadfast commitment to health and safety, ensuring every employee, contractor and visitor is protected within our operations.

By adhering to the highest industry standards and regulatory requirements - particularly those governing nuclear and high-integrity supply chains - we strive not only to prevent accidents and injuries but to promote overall well-being and performance.

Social Values

We understand the positive impact that healthy, engaged employees have on business performance. Our people are our most important asset and investing in them is central to how we operate.

We participate in community projects and support the development of young people through our Apprenticeship schemes and training opportunities. We are also committed to our local community with most of our employees coming from the local area.

Sustainability

Reducing carbon emissions is one part of our sustainability commitment at Steel Dynamics UK — but our obligations extend further. We have implemented a comprehensive ESG framework built on three pillars: environmental sustainability, social responsibility and corporate governance.

Our stainless-only processing model also contributes to a lower environmental footprint, reducing material waste and simplifying the supply chain compared to multi-metal service centres.

Careers

At Steel Dynamics UK, our people are the lifeblood of our business. We strive to create an invaluable employee experience and continuously grow our team. We believe our employees are proud to be a part of our team and take a keen interest to develop their knowledge and skills within the Metal industry.

With our people-focused culture and leadership-based attitude, we want our employees to feel valued and supported throughout their careers with us, with a safe and supportive working environment, alongside a strong ethos of respect and friendly working relationships.
