Steel Dynamics UK now operates from Altham, Lancashire, combining dedicated stainless steel processing with controlled inspection, testing and traceability for high-integrity and regulated applications.
Our established equipment and experienced team have moved from Blackburn into a facility laid out around the flow of material, from goods-in through production to despatch.
Two new 20kW fibre lasers are being installed alongside our existing cutting, machining and press braking capabilities, adding capacity while maintaining our specialist stainless steel focus.
Our Facility
Our dedicated stainless steel facility at Altham replaces our previous Blackburn site. The layout follows the flow of material through goods-in, racked stock, cutting, finishing, inspection and despatch. This reduces internal movement and gives material a shorter route from the stock rack to a finished part ready for delivery.
We hold over 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless steel and provide in-house processing from one location. Deliveries and collections now come to Altham, while our phone numbers, email addresses and usual contacts remain unchanged. No carbon steel or other alloy groups are handled anywhere on site.
Processor - Not a Distributor
A processor controls the entire value chain in a dedicated facility. A distributor supplies material from multiple sources, across multiple locations, with no single point of accountability.
The distinction matters. In nuclear, aerospace, defence and critical infrastructure - where traceability, consistency and conformity cannot be compromised - the processor model is the only credible option. Every stage of the supply chain at Steel Dynamics UK happens under one roof: mill delivery, cutting, testing, inspection, dispatch. One team. One facility. One quality standard. That is a fundamentally different proposition to a distributor coordinating multiple sites and suppliers.
Sustainable Manufacturing
Minimising waste generation and maximising recycling are central to sustainable steel processing. Our CAD team analyse the steel plate requirements for various projects. They assess factors such as project specifications, structural requirements and cutting constraints to determine the most efficient use of steel plates, thereby significantly reducing waste. What waste we do produce is fully recycled ensuring we play our part in a circular economy.

All our Fibre Laser machines operate with 100% eco-efficiency, meaning we can also sustainably support our customers with the most environmentally friendly processing equipment.
Stainless Steel Only
Steel Dynamics UK processes one material group: stainless steel. No carbon steel. No aluminium. No mixed-alloy processing in shared equipment. In a multi-metal environment, cross-contamination is a genuine risk. Embedded iron particles from carbon steel tooling cause rust-staining and can compromise corrosion resistance - a critical failure point in high-integrity applications. A contaminated component is a failed component.
Our single-metal facility eliminates that risk by design. Dedicated equipment, a dedicated workforce and dedicated quality controls — all focused on stainless steel. For engineers specifying material to critical standards, that environment is a technical advantage, not a preference.
