Investment at Steel Dynamics UK means one thing - making our state-of-the-art, stainless-only facility the most capable stainless steel processing operation in the UK.
We do not spread capital across multiple sites or multiple metal groups. Every pound invested goes directly into the equipment, systems and people that service our customers in nuclear, aerospace, defence and critical infrastructure.
With new financial backing secured in January 2026, we are in a stronger position than ever to accelerate that investment programme - in direct response to growing demand from nuclear new-build, life extension programmes and other high-integrity sectors.
Manufacturing Space
Our 100,000 sq ft facility in Blackburn is dedicated entirely to stainless steel. No other metal groups are processed here - cross-contamination risk is eliminated by design, not just by procedure. From this single site we hold 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless plate and sheet and provide the full range of in-house processing
Our stainless steel processing capability includes fibre laser cutting, waterjet cutting and high-definition plasma cutting supported by CNC machining. This gives customers a single route from material availability to cut and machined components with clear documentation and traceability.
Added-Value Processing
We have the widest range of processing services available from any metal service centre in Europe. With 27 state-of-the-art added-value processing machines, including a full suite of cutting machines at your disposal, we have the tools and expertise to bring your projects to life with precision and efficiency.
Home to the UK's largest 14M x 4M waterjet cutting machine, we can handle waterjet cutting on stainless steel grades up to 200mm in thickness. Plus, our arsenal of processing equipment includes the latest high powered fibre laser cutting machines, hi-def plasma with oxy fuel plate, CNC machining, CNC cutting, press brakes, testing and more.
Stock Holding
We hold 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless steel and process around 10,000 tonnes annually - all from a single facility dedicated exclusively to stainless steel.
Every tonne we hold comes from leading European mills, is fully certified on arrival, and is subject to Positive Material Identification before entering the processing workflow. Mill test certificates and full traceability documentation leave with every order as standard. We stock stainless grades from 0.5mm to 150mm thickness, covering the full range demanded by nuclear, aerospace and defence and general engineering specifications.
Nuclear Accreditations
Steel Dynamics UK was the world's first metal service centre to achieve ISO 19443 - the nuclear quality management standard extending the principles of ISO 9001 across the entire nuclear supply chain. Our entire operation is purpose-built around that achievement, not simply compliant with it.
We process only stainless steel, in a dedicated facility, with no cross-contamination risk and unbroken traceability from mill origin to finished part. ISO 19443 was not a box to tick - it was formal recognition of an operational model already designed for nuclear requirements. With nuclear new-build and decommissioning programmes growing, our stainless-only processing model gives customers the assurance that no multi-metal distributor can offer.
