Lean duplex stainless steels combine the corrosion resistance and strength advantages of the duplex family with substantially lower nickel content.

Steel Dynamics UK stocks the three most widely specified lean duplex grades: LDX 2101 (1.4162), DX 2202 (1.4062) and EDX 2304 (1.4362) - all European-origin and cut to size.

 

Buyers move to lean duplex from 304 or 316 for one of three reasons: cost stability (less exposed to nickel price volatility), specification uplift (higher strength allowing thinner sections and lower material tonnage), or corrosion service (particularly chloride environments where 304 or 316 has borderline suitability). 

Lean Duplex

Lean Duplex is a type of duplex alloy that combines the best characteristics of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. The “lean” designation refers to its reduced alloying content, particularly in nickel and molybdenum, which makes it more cost-effective and sustainable without compromising on performance.

Lean Duplex Applications

The strength and corrosion resistance of Lean Duplex make it suitable for a diverse range of applications across multiple industries. It is widely used in architectural and structural fabrications, pressure vessels, storage tanks and process piping systems.

In addition, it is often specified for water treatment facilities, desalination plants, chemical processing, transport equipment and offshore or coastal structures.

 

The combination of high strength and good formability allows designers and fabricators to use thinner sections and lighter structures, reducing both material usage and overall fabrication costs while maintaining performance and longevity.

Why Lean Duplex

Many of our customers choose Lean Duplex because it offers the ideal balance between cost, performance and sustainability. Compared with conventional austenitic grades such as 304 and 316, Lean Duplex delivers greater corrosion resistance, roughly twice the mechanical strength and lower alloying costs due to reduced nickel and molybdenum content.

When compared to standard Duplex or Super Duplex grades, Lean Duplex provides a more economical solution while still offering excellent corrosion resistance and strength for most general engineering and fabrication environments.

 

It is also easier to process and weld, reducing production time and costs. As a result, Lean Duplex is often the most efficient choice for projects where both performance and cost-effectiveness are key considerations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lean duplex stainless steel?
Lean duplex is a sub-family of duplex stainless steels with reduced nickel content (typically 1.5–5% versus 8–10% in 304 and 316). Despite the lower nickel, they deliver higher yield strength than austenitic stainless and better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. LDX 2101 (1.4162), DX 2202 (1.4062) and EDX 2304 (1.4362) are the most widely specified lean duplex grades.

Is lean duplex better than 304 or 316?
For many applications, yes. Lean duplex has roughly double the yield strength of 304, better stress corrosion cracking resistance, and is less exposed to nickel price volatility. LDX 2101 offers corrosion resistance comparable to 304 in most service environments; EDX 2304 approaches 316 performance at a lower price point. The main trade-off is slightly reduced formability and weldability compared to austenitic grades.

When should I use lean duplex instead of 304?
When you can benefit from the higher strength (allowing thinner sections and lower material cost), when nickel price volatility is a concern, or when the service environment has chloride content that would put 304 close to its limit.

 

What is LDX 2101?
LDX 2101 is the trade name for lean duplex grade 1.4162 (UNS S32101), developed by Outokumpu. It has approximately 21% chromium, 1.5% nickel, 5% manganese and 0.22% nitrogen — a lower-nickel duplex chemistry balanced with manganese and nitrogen for austenite stability.

Do you stock lean duplex in the UK?
Yes. LDX 2101, DX 2202 and EDX 2304 in plate and sheet, held in Lancashire, cut to size and shipped nationwide.

LDX 2101 (1.4162) is the most established lean duplex grade, offering yield strength roughly double that of 304 and better resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking. DX 2202 (1.4062) sits between LDX 2101 and standard duplex 1.4462 in performance and cost. EDX 2304 (1.4362) is a higher-alloyed lean duplex delivering corrosion performance approaching standard duplex at a materially lower price point.
