Our Story

At Steel Dynamics UK, we're customer focused, we're committed to service and adding value, we're driven by quality, we're industry leading .... and we’ve only just begun!

Steel Dynamics UK started out with a vision to improve service levels in the metals processing industry.

From one machine and limited stock, we have grown to hold 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless steel and process around 10,000 tonnes annually - all from a single, stainless-only facility in Blackburn, with safety, traceability and quality management at the core of everything we do.

The Beginning

Steel Dynamics UK was founded in 2011 by Robert Pattenden and Danny McKinley with a simple mission - to be the lowest cost per ton steel processors, delivered on time door-to-door. Originally based in Bolton with just one machine, Steel Dynamics had turnover exceeding £5 million in the first full year's trading.

ISO 9001 certification followed in 2012 - a deliberate early signal that quality management, traceability and accountability would define this business. Those founding principles remain at the heart of how we operate today, and have shaped every investment and decision that has followed.

Growth and Expansion

Throughout the 2010s, Steel Dynamics UK invested consistently in capability — deepening our stainless steel specialism rather than broadening into other metal groups.

In 2014, we became the first UK business to install a fibre laser cutting machine in the steel processing industry - a decision that transformed our precision cutting capability and opened doors into new high-integrity markets. Sustained growth led to relocation in 2017 to our current site on the Walker Industrial Estate in Blackburn, and subsequently to a purpose-built 100,000 sq ft stainless-only facility designed for the processing volumes and quality standards demanded by nuclear and regulated sectors.

Market Challenges

Like any business in the UK steel sector, Steel Dynamics UK has navigated fluctuating material costs, overseas competition and shifting regulatory demands. Our response has been consistent: invest in the right capability, concentrate on the right sectors, and build a specialism that competitors cannot easily replicate.

The growth of nuclear power as a pillar of the UK's net-zero energy strategy, and the unique supply chain requirements that come with it, has validated our decision to build the entire operation around a single metal group. The market does not reward generalists in regulated sectors. Traceability, single-source accountability and contamination-free processing are requirements, not preferences.

Recent Developments

In January 2026, Steel Dynamics UK entered a new chapter. The business was acquired by Steel Dynamics Holdings Limited and backed by a consortium of investors, with Peter Cowgill joining as Chairman and Ian Johnson as Executive Group Director. Robert Pattenden and Danny McKinley continue to lead operations.

This marks a significant step: operational independence, new financial backing and the ability to accelerate investment decisions without the constraints of group ownership. The focus remains entirely on stainless steel. With 3,000 tonnes of stock, 10,000 tonnes processed annually and a 100,000 sq ft dedicated facility, Steel Dynamics UK is better placed than ever to service the most demanding customers in nuclear, aerospace and defence, and more!

Steel Dynamics UK employs over 50 people in Blackburn. We are a dedicated stainless steel processor, independent, specialist and purpose-built for the most demanding applications.
