Steel Dynamics UK started out with a vision to improve service levels in the metals processing industry.
Today, we hold over 3,000 tonnes of European-origin stainless steel at our dedicated facility in Altham, Lancashire. Our September 2026 move from Blackburn brings the same specialist team, processing capabilities and accreditations into a new site laid out around stockholding, production and despatch.
The Beginning
Steel Dynamics UK was founded in 2011 by Robert Pattenden and Danny McKinley with a simple mission - to be the lowest cost per ton steel processors, delivered on time door-to-door. Originally based in Bolton with just one machine, Steel Dynamics had turnover exceeding £5 million in the first full year's trading.
ISO 9001 certification followed in 2012 - a deliberate early signal that quality management, traceability and accountability would define this business. Those founding principles remain at the heart of how we operate today, and have shaped every investment and decision that has followed.
Growth and Expansion
Throughout the 2010s, Steel Dynamics UK invested in processing equipment, stockholding and quality systems, developing its stainless steel specialism rather than expanding into other metal groups.

Investment in fibre laser cutting in 2014 strengthened our precision processing capability. Further investment in equipment and quality management supported the business as it developed its work with customers in high-integrity and regulated sectors. The business relocated to the Walker Industrial Estate in Blackburn in 2017. In September 2026, we moved to Altham, Lancashire, bringing our established team and processing equipment into a dedicated stainless steel facility laid out around material flow from goods-in to despatch.
Market Challenges
Like any business in the UK steel sector, Steel Dynamics UK has navigated fluctuating material costs, overseas competition and shifting regulatory demands. Our response has been consistent: invest in the right capability, concentrate on the right sectors, and build a specialism that competitors cannot easily replicate.
The growth of nuclear power as a pillar of the UK's net-zero energy strategy, and the unique supply chain requirements that come with it, has validated our decision to build the entire operation around a single metal group. The market does not reward generalists in regulated sectors. Traceability, single-source accountability and contamination-free processing are requirements, not preferences.
Recent Developments
In January 2026, Steel Dynamics Holdings Limited acquired the business with backing from a consortium of investors. Peter Cowgill joined as Chairman and Ian Johnson as Executive Group Director, alongside Robert Pattenden and Danny McKinley. The investment supported operational independence and a continued focus on stainless steel processing.
September 2026 marks the next stage with our move from Blackburn to Altham. Two new 20kW fibre laser cutting machines, each with a 6,000 x 2,500mm bed, are being installed alongside our existing processing equipment. The site is dedicated entirely to stainless steel, with the same management team, usual contacts and accreditations. The investment is focused on stockholding, processing capacity and on-time delivery.
