Not all stainless steel is the same.

This side-by-side comparison shows why grade selection matters in real service conditions.


316 stainless steel stays clean and stable because it contains molybdenum. That extra alloying element significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments such as coastal sites and process plants.


304 stainless steel performs well in many general applications but without molybdenum it is more likely to discolour and develop surface corrosion where chlorides are present.


Carbon steel will oxidise quickly unless it is protected by coatings, corrosion allowance or a controlled environment.
